der Hund - the dog

i have had multiple requests for an entry about zoe's reaction to us when we came home. so here it is!

zoe lived at dan's aunt's house in LA for the 6 months we were in berlin. she was very loved, and was even given parmesan cheese on her regular food so she would be sure to eat. she got lots of attention and walks. frankly, dan and i were less worried that she would recognize us as we were nervous she wouldn't want to leave.

we had heard that she would watch cars similar to ours drive by hoping it was us, and that she got excited whenever she heard a car door close outside of the house. funny, whenever we saw a dog walk by in berlin dan would watch longingly, and every time he heard a bark outside the house he got up to look out the window. so it came as no surprise to me that dan wanted to go to LA as soon as possible to get zoe.

we drove down on saturday morning. i adjusted to the time change right away, but dan was up at 4:30 am. i found him on the couch watching a terrible movie. he said, "oh good, want some breakfast?" we ate and got going hours before we had told dan's aunt we would. when dan called to say we were coming, carol was (luckily) already awake. unluckily, it was because zoe has been waking her up at 4:30am for a while now. more things dan and zoe have in common...

5 hours later we pulled up in front of the house. dan barely remembered to take the keys out of the ignition. he was so excited. as we walked up to the door zoe, who never ever barks, was woofing up a storm. she was wagging so hard she was almost falling over. she let me in the door but immediately flopped over on her back for a tummy rub. so poor dan was left outside to watch me get all the zoe love. he pushed his way in, but it was almost too late, all the love had been spent on me. dan got sloppy seconds. i'd say he was chopped liver, but i think zoe might have paid that more attention than she did to dan.

finally, after a little while we all sat down and zoe came to dan. she gave him lots and lots of love grunts. an hour or so later things were back to normal. zoe was very happy to have us there but no one got more love than anyone else. we went for a walk and learned her new routine. she was even fine when we left for dinner. no separation anxieties. and she came home with us without protest.

now back home things with zoe are just like before. she loves the cat, the cat hisses back. she greets dan at the door every single time he comes home, even if she's in a deep sleep in the back of the house. she's always coming out to see where we are and how we are doing. dan is so happy to have her back that he gets sad when i take her to play with another dog instead of all of us going on a walk together.

so while i may have gotten the first wonderful greeting, dan is truly zoe's best friend. and of course vice versa. he knows he has years of loving greetings coming.

thank you to carol for all of the work and love you put into having zoe while we were gone. next time you come see us, you'll be the one getting all of the love grunts!
