die über Schüssel - Superbowl
okay okay, they actually just say "superbowl" but come on, it is so fun to say über!
i am dating this post sunday even though it is actually monday. the public broadcasting station is showing the superbowl from 0:00 - 4:00. but it's still superbowl sunday to me.
i'm not sure what i was expecting from german superbowl coverage. they have commentators who have flown to detroit to cover the play by play. one guy, is actually a former rams player who is german (tom nütten, i believe). he looks and talks just like an american football player except that i can't understand him, so it's a lot like watching john madden. the field coverage is a direct feed from abc, but there are very few commercials. the few commercials we get are all for nfl europe. (there are 6 nfl europe teams and 5 of them are in germany.) so we spend a lot of time watching the cameras get focused on the correct players and generally just waiting around until the next play. so it's kind of like being at the game! we even have a mini pizza and beer! except our german beer is so much better...
except for this year's wardrobe malfunction - mic jagger's clothes obviously shrinking two sizes in the dryer before he came out on stage - and our former "classmate" (loosly used term), antwaan randel el, throwing a touchdown pass, this superbowl didn't have the oomph of others. without the parties, alchohol abuse and excesive eating of fat that normally accompany the superbowl it's hard to get one's heart into it.
the season for nfl europe begins on march 18th. maybe that will satisfy our football needs. i think i'll root for germany.
