lange nacht - long night

last night we engaged in another berlin tradition, the "long night of museums." twice a year the museums in the city stay open until the wee hours giving guided tours, showing films, having concerts, lectures, shows, workshops, you name it. of course all of that was in german, so dan and i took this opportunity to see a few of the museums' permanent exhibits and ride the public transportation for the cost of seeing just one museum.

we started the night at 8pm at the hamburger bahnhof, an old train station revamped into an art museum. the entire museum was lit up with blue lights outside and was stark white inside. the museum itself was a really interesting example of berlin architecture. they also have an awesome warhol collection.

after that we took the shuttle bus all around berlin ending up at museum island. we were headed to the old national gallery where there was a staged reading outside and a liebslieder concert inside. apologies to Manet, but the art in that museum failed to hold our interest so we went over to the egyptian museum where they house the bust of queen nefertiti.

by this time it was midnight and we had frozen our buns off waiting in line some places. so we had yet another german tradition - glühwein. it's like hot sangria. yucky but warm. glühwein is my least favorite german tradition.

in summary: it was, indeed, a long night (of museums). but we had fun.
