der Trickfilm - cartoon
on the advice of the woman from berlitz language school i have been watching some television shows made for kids. she said it would be satisfying because that is about the level of vocabulary i have right now. makes sense. i often feel like a 7 year old when i am trying to order coffee or buy cleaning supplies.
cartoons today are not nearly as entertaining as the smurfs. (what is "smurftastic" in german?) i'm trying to watch, and i'm not amused. i have just about had my fill of high pitched german animé when on comes "logo!", a kids news program. ok, i can handle this - current events in kid speak - perfect. a clean cut, cool looking dude sits in a colorful set and starts talking. i understand nothing so far, but it's okay. it's not like he's saying anything important.
the word "hamas" appears on the screen. what the...? (squinty question face) they are going to try to explain the palestinian election to kids. now i am really regretting that i don't understand. there are cartoony pictures of israel, and surrounding areas, two guys in robes with covered heads and guns, and a family in western clothing (i'm guessing jewish israelis). thought bubbles pop out of the different groups' heads. single words with exclamation points. at one point all the people are saying the same one word at the same time!
i am dying. what are they saying?! i know roughly the word for "get the *#@&* off of my land" and this is not it. i can't get up to get my suddenly-not-so-handy german dictionary because i can't stop watching the little figures and their bubbles. i might miss something. but what single word can they be saying that sums up the entire conflict?! i know it's for kids but it can't be this easy. the entire hamas news/cartoon lasted maybe 1 full minute and then there was a story about a candy convention. of course i forgot the word.
i guess i'm out of the loop as to what kids watch and learn on tv these days. that's a sad statement for a teacher so i did some research. a little poking around on the internet produced the site for "logo!" and it's content, not the actual segments but further information on their current stories. i was amazed to see just how much information kids have about hamas and the palestinian elections at their fingertips. how much more informed would i be had i been able to learn about the cold war or iran hostage crisis by going on line and playing games and reading fun articles? knowing me i wouldn't have used it, but that's beside the point. kids today have so much information available to them! i hope they are using it.

It actually sounds a little weird. Some things probably should NOT be presented in cartoon format.
When my sister was teaching a 2-way bi-lingual 1st grade class she, too, developed a very unusual vocabulary...she could say things in Spanish like "Jack in the Beanstalk" and "line up."
