wir brennen - we're burning up
...with world cup fever!
well if we didn't have world cup fever before we do now. i'm pretty sure it's contagious. dan caught it at about 4pm yesterday when they let everyone go from work early so they could get home in time for kick off.
our friends erin and katie are here to visit. we took a little day trip today to leipzig to see the east german secret police museum and all the bach sights. what we found was a mass of bright orange wearing, dutch singing, very "relaxed", netherland fans. finding the cultural sights marked in our guide book proved almost impossible given the giant screens covering the opera house and the sea of neon orange surrounding us. when we got to the church that gives weekly bach organ concerts we found that, instead of the concert, tonight's entertainment would be the sweden vs. trinidad and tobago shown on screens over the altar.
we gave up on seeing the sights. we got some pizza and did some serious people watching. katie had her picture taken with a man dressed head to toe in neon orange wearing an orange feather headdress. we collected free orange cell phone covers. we watched a tiny bit of the england vs. paraguay game on the giant downtown screens. overall, i would say that i enjoyed our small superfan experience. no hooligans + small town + fans from a mellow nation = a good world cup gathering.
we've decided to try our luck with the berlin fan zone (who have come from everywhere and are very rowdy). if you don't hear from us by thursday of next week we've been mauled by a group of crazed brazilians or trampled by croatian fans running amok - depending on who wins, or loses, i suppose.
