peinlich - awkward
tonight we had dinner with a couple of dan's colleagues and their wives. very 1950's. at one point the more senior boss guy asked me if i cooked for myself when dan is at work. i said no, i microwave the leftovers from the previous night's dinner, which dan cooks.
--silence --
quick, focus attention elsewhere. "so, (other wife) you're having twins in july! that's great!"
so, i don't cook! really it's best for everyone that i don't. if they had ever tried my food they would agree. i guess i don't fit the traditional definition of hausfrau. i think we knew that already.
i am happy to say that this was the only awkward moment of the dinner that had been built up in both of our minds as the obligatory "go out with the boss and laugh at his sexist jokes" dinner. no sexist jokes. they were all very nice and spoke english almost exclusively. it was nice to have people to interact with, and someone to order in german.
