mein Freund - my friend

tonight dan and i are attending our very first - quite possibly only - international film festival. the berlin film festival started this weekend and will last for a week or so. many of the movies are in english or have english subtitles. we have tickets to see a movie from the UK called Breakfast on Pluto. it has had a few previews in the states.

my understanding of film festivals is that there are a lot of famous people attending various movies and press conferences to do the other part of their job, supporting the industry and promoting themselves. since we are going to a movie that should generate a lot of buzz, at least in my opinion, i am assuming that there will be famous people there.

the following scenario is roughly how i see my evening going. in fact, if it doesn't go something like this i will be greatly disappointed.

me: (generally arranging my coat etc.)

man: (in english) excuse me, is this seat taken?

me: well, actually... (look up at man) oh! uh... no. please, have a seat.

man: thank you. you're not german. where are you from?

me: i grew up in colorado. my name is jordan.

man: i'm -

me: you're george clooney. i know. good luck with the oscars. it's always been a dream of mine to win the best director oscar.

man: (bored) oh, are you in the business?

me: no. kinda? no. i'm a drama teacher.

man: (perking up) really?! that's fascinating. so tell me all about it!

dan enters carrying our wine (cause you can drink wine in a movie here). he clears his throat when he sees there is someone in his seat.

man: oh, i'm sorry, am i in your seat?

i hide my face in embarrassment.

dan: well, yah, but that's cool, man. i'll just sit over here. no big deal. you're george clooney.

man: wow, thanks, man. i was just talking to my new friend jordan. she was just about to tell me all about the awesomeness of being a drama teacher.

lights begin to dim.

man: tell you what, to make up for taking your seat and to hear more about the amazing world of arts education, let me take you guys out for drinks at the top of the TV tower after the movie. i have a private room up there.

dan and me: OKAY!

-end scene-

and that's how i meet george clooney, my new friend, and fervent supporter of arts education in public schools.

(dan would like me to add that we would never be so star struck in real life and he hopes all you readers understand that i am joking. but you never know...)
