strassewurst - street sausage
dan was feeling a little better today so we headed out to get a few essentials before everything closes at around 2pm. or so we thought.
when we left the house, at about 11am, the sky was gray and there was a light mist of rain in the air. it was warmer than it has been but i wouldn't say that spring has sprung quite yet. as we looked around we noticed that there was virtually no one around. the streets were quiet, there were only a few people on the sidewalk, indeed it was as ghosttowny as a major urban center can be. "it's rainy and gross," we thought, "maybe they're all staying home today."
we headed toward the ku'damm, the majorly fancy shopping street where there is a bookstore with an english language section. here, we discovered, were all the people. like us, they were all en route to the ku'damm. but why?
the answer: tonight is the "long night of shopping" in berlin. like the "long night of museums" the "long night of shopping" includes special events. in the shopping version these special events are sales. so while we were on a mission for one or two particular items, the whole of berlin was on a mission of their own: to get a deal. to fulfill this mission apparently requires entire families or groups of people to walk slowly down the sidewalk, umbrellas carelessly swinging about, while gaping at the window displays.
the upside? where there are masses of people gathered for special events there is street food! this being germany, we were witness to the best of all possible street food options. every four feet or so was another grill with bratwurst, weisswurst, currywurst, you-name-it-wurst, and huge soft fresh pretzels. we were drooling even before heading into the KaDeWe foodhall. salsa and flour tortillas in hand (only available at the KaDeWe) we decided, "who needs fancy expensive wurst when we've got a whole street of it outside?"
two minutes later we were sharing a 1/2 meter long bratwurst on a fresh baguette and headed back home to put on sweat pants.
