the 408

golden hills, rolling fog, waving palms...

streaming traffic, world-famous corporations, impending earthquakes...

the heart of silicon valley, the south bay region, the 408...

this is san jose.

set at the tip of the san francisco bay is the 10th largest city, and the safest, in america. for the privilege of being one of the 930,000 people living in our 223 square miles you can expect to pay a premium. the median single family home price is $710,000 (the national median price is $173,600).* of course, to live in a nice area of town you'll pay more than median. a 2 bedroom 1 bath (in need of renovation) on a busy street a nice neighborhood - will cost you $723,000. in most areas of the country that much money will get you a ton of house and a 2 bedroom and 1 bathroom structure is called a trailer.

san jose is more affordable than the rest of santa clara county, which includes such fancy towns as los gatos, los altos hills, and palo alto. palo alto, home to stanford university and sand hill road's many venture capitalist firms, is not to be confused with east palo alto - which is one of the poorest cities in the area (and in a different county). perhaps it is worth the extra bucks to some people to live in a giant house overlooking highway 280, or next door to a linear accelerator. to me, each of our 3 minute commutes to work is worth the less fancy town. so our mayor was just indicted for fraud and they close down the major streets for an indy car race - for the most part that doesn't affect me.

ok, enough of the lecture. basically, san jose is the city in which dan and i live, but don't know a whole lot about. i am determined to change that and have decided to explore here much like i did in berlin - but without the time crunch, or the german, probably. i'll be sure to let you in on my adventures, wacky or otherwise.

*you can see this data on the san jose city site and the santa clara county site.
