i'm dreaming of a white christmas

got it - in spades!

our interfaith marriage is incredibly convenient when it comes to dividing up the holidays. thanksgiving with dan's family, christmas with mine. the convenience, unfortunately, ends there. in the last five or so years there has not been one year where both trips (northeast and southwest respectively) have gone smoothly. there have been years where dan's family has traveled to several different airports between midnight and 4am as our flights have been canceled and rerouted. getting through chicago or denver in november and december is never pretty.

and so, here we are, all set with our plans for christmas in colorado when the biggest blizzard in denver's history hits. luckily, i was able to come out earlier in the week since school let out last friday. dan, however, was not so lucky. as the inches accumulated and highways began to shut down, so did all hopes of seeing dan. he tried every possible maneuver: got hotel rooms reserved in multiple locations in case he got in and we didn't get there to pick him up, researched flights for all airlines into any city within 7 hours driving distance of denver, called car rental agencies to ask about the price of renting a car to denver and then using the return flight as scheduled, and finally he canceled everything and opted to avoid the mess entirely. he stayed home with the pets. the irony is that all this happened after dan changed his flight from friday (when he could have gotten in) to thursday just to spend my grandpa's birthday with us.

tonight, at just about the time he was supposed to land (if DIA were open) i got a message on my cell phone. it said, "it's me. i'm home alone and bored. call me." turns out the worst thing about your travel plans being thwarted by a colorado blizzard is not being able to enjoy the beauty of the snow with your loved ones. dan rented 4 movies, bought a bunch of firewood, and made some hot chocolate. he is determined to have a cozy, relaxing snow day even though it's warm in california. he's apparently forgotten that he has to work tomorrow.

my mother, brother and i will drive across the state tomorrow in an effort to get to my grandpa before christmas and/or he runs out of groceries. i guess dan can take comfort in the fact that we won't be having a cozy colorado snow day but instead will be braving the dangerous roads and crowds of others attempting to reach their vacation destinations. driving through four feet of snow and ice is not my idea of cozy or relaxing.

it will indeed be a white christmas. perhaps next year i'll dream of a tepid christmas with clear skies.

  • Hsve you thought about having a web-cam Christmas?? Not quite the same, but better than pining for your loved one.
Hoping you make it to your grandpa's birthday--as well as Christmas in the Springs.
    Love to all--
