kein Filmstar - no george
well, i am greatly disappointed. no george clooney. no new friend. no new fervent supporter of arts education. someone did ask if dan's seat was free, but it turned out to be a nice looking young woman, not george clooney. i made the mistake of telling dan to which he responded, "next time you are the one getting the coke!"
that said, i think attending film festivals is my new favorite thing. there were 1000 people at this movie and everyone was speaking a different language. there were press people and fans and people like dan and me who just think the idea of going to a film festival is cool. there was a great energy in the air. the cast was there though they were asked only one question each and their answers were typical - "i enjoyed working on this film...."
Breakfast on Pluto is based on the autobiography of a transvestite prostitute who grew up in the 60s and 70s in ireland. sounds heavy, no? i was prepared for serious material in a hard-to-watch style that seeks to examine prejudice in a time of political unrest. not so much. the opening sequence, in which two computer animated robins fly over the small town gossiping about its residents, both amused and worried me. "oh no," i thought, "talking birds can't be a good approach to gender issues." but i need not fret. the animated birds quickly made way for Liam Nieson - this is a movie set in ireland after all - and other excellent human actors. the character of patrick, aka "kitten", smiles through heartbreaking moments of homophobia and ridiculous odd jobs remaining ever optimistic in her pursuit to find the mother who abandoned her. in the end i was satisfied. there was great range of emotion in the characters, the presentation of ireland's history was sensitive, and the character's individual life choices lacked preachiness. the robins even make an appearance at the end of the movie, tidily wrapping it all up.
we have a few more festival movies that we'd like to see including two documentaries, one on wal-mart and another on the process of auditioning and casting. i'll have more chances to see george or sigourney or anyone else. but i have a feeling dan will make me go get the refreshments next time.

I met Jill Hennessey, of Law and Order fame, at a film festival in Maryland a couple of years ago. She was in a film made by a friend of my friend Dave, who was totally in love with Jill and therefore of course, completely made a fool of himself when he met her.
