das Mittagsessen - lunch
well, you'll be proud of me. today i asked some of the english speakers if anyone wanted to go out to lunch with me. most everyone was busy except for the girl from calgary who is 18. she said she was craving a coke float so we went to an american diner down the street from the german school.
we spoke english the entire time as we are probably the two slowest german speakers in class. it would have taken forever to communicate the very few things we thought we knew about each other's countries:
her: as she studied the menu cover's map of route 66 she noted, "wow, denver" - yes, the map of the route was less than accurate - "and the grand canyon are like next door to each other so you must have been there a lot."
me: "so, banff, that's near calgary, right? yeah, i heard it's really pretty. sometime i'd like to go to vancouver... i know that's not near calgary, but still."
we may not have had much to talk about but small talk with someone new is far more interesting than grocery shopping again. we planned to meet again with others from the class to study and generally hang out. i love dan, but it's nice to have a new person to talk to.
