der Biergarten - outdoor drinking establishment
dan: your mission, should you choose to accept it: enjoy the weather and find a biergarten.
me: initiate walking sequence at 1300 hours.
we set out for a quick little walk into the tiergarten. we ended up on a six hour trek. the tiergarten is a very large park in the center of berlin. the eastern end of it was no man's land during wall times. we thought we'd wander into the park, stroll a bit, have a few beers, and play some cards.
we leave the house - 1300 hours: early on we see a biergarten, but it was such a nice day and we wanted to keep walking. then a little later we see another biergarten. (unfortunately dan and i have a habit of passing up the first good things we see in favor of finding something a little better later on. more often than not we end up with blisters on our feet and nothing accomplished except for a lot of gluteous maximus work.) our mission grew more impossible as we walked.
1400 hours: we somehow end up out of the park on a main road. no biergartens here. we walk back into the park after studying the map for prospective biergarten locations.
14:30: we see a large group of people gathered by the schloss in the park and headed toward it. we found about 200 turkish families grilling their lunches. the smell was awesome, and we're starting to get hungry. but no biergarten. we keep walking.
1500 hours: we find a beautiful little garden and contemplate buying our own beer to drink here. we remember it's sunday and nothing is open. we keep walking.
15:30: we end up in potsdamer platz. there are a lot of little restaurants here but they aren't in the sun, they're too expensive, and they're not biergartens. we consider seeing a movie but it's too nice outside to sit in a theater. we're grumpy and tired. we keep walking.
1600 hours: there is officially nothing that will satisfy us except for a biergarten. we take the s-bahn back to the first biergarten.
16:30: i don't like the look of the first biergarten and make us walk to the second biergarten. it's super crowded.
1700 hours: we can't figure out how to order because there are no lines, and to top it off they don't even serve bratwurst. we grab a pizza off the counter and head to the beer line where i am ignored because i am short. this happens in the states, but here in the land of giants it is far worse and i am angry. i finally order 2 of whichever i can pronounce and we buy our really expensive, low quality dinner.
17:30: we wolf down our pizza and chug what ends up being the worst beer i have ever had. turns out the one i could pronounce is actually a beer mixed with lemonade. we're not satisfied with our beer garden experience but at least we're seated.
18:30: dan beats me at cards and we brave the beer counter again where i am the only woman ordering beer and am ignored again. i get the second easiest beer to pronounce and we like it better. we finish the beers and head home.
1900 hours: the cat is mad at us for being gone so long. we change our shoes and decide to go see mission impossible 3. we reflected on our own almost impossible mission. but, just like tom and company, our mission was accomplished: we went to a biergarten in the tiergarten.
