was in den Vegas geschieht, ist, was in den Vegas bleibt - what happens in vegas stays in vegas

two weekends ago we went to vegas with our friends brian and meena. we had a fantastic time and were never really separated, we even shared a room! and we each walked away happy, having done something we love to do in vegas: dan ate filet mignon, brian won at blackjack, meena shopped, and i saw a show! (thank you, jerry and cindy, for a very generous anniversary gift!!)

we even went to the pool and the spa together. best of all we went to dinner together in the bellagio, were seated next to the windows looking out on the fountains for dinner, and got a special desert and champagne table afterward on the terrace next to the fountains!

we did it all, and we did it together. ah, friends... (warm fuzzies).

fast forward a week: we get a call from brian and meena saying: "we just spent the weekend in santa barbara with friends," (what "friends"? who are these other "friends"? we're your friends!) "and by the way, we need that parking pass from last weekend back. you threw it away? well, can you dump the trash and look for it? thanks. by the way, we're 5 minutes from your house. what's that? you're cooking dinner? don't mind if we do!!"

it's a testament to our friendship that this phone call didn't even remotely bother us. i promptly tidied the house and cleaned the bathroom, and dan turned the recycling bin over on the driveway and assumed a through-the-legs digging motion. (the dog was admiring his form, i could tell) we laughed about the situation over dinner, drank the wine they brought, and played yahtzee.

so, it seems, the las vegas catchphrase has proven untrue. the warm fuzzies of togetherness didn't stay in vegas, they followed us home.

now if only we could say the same for our money... .
