the deadbolt here works like a chain in the states, but instead of a chain it is a large metal box that slides open and then catches.

this is what it should look like when opened correctly.

hallo?! jemand zu hause?! - hello?! anybody home?! (usually accompanied by knocking on the head of the person you are asking)

every night dan deadbolts the door. every morning he unbolts it to leave for work. every weekend i seem to get to the door first, forget to unlock it, and subsequently make a really loud noise that echoes into our hallway and staircase. you would think after so many weekends here that i would have remembered to unlock it at least once. but no.

today dan got to the door first - and forgot to unlock it!! ha ha! as the loud metallic sound reverberated around the staircase this time it was MY laughter, not dan's, that accompanied it.

we should replace our nameplate outside with "tweedledumb and tweedledumber". (feel free to choose who is the dumber...)
