move over "i love you." you're passe. the new three little words: tax-free-shopping. spend over 150 euros and it's tax free! with tax in berlin at 18% that's nothing to sneeze at.
if you turn right on the ku'damm from our street you get the fancy pants shops like cartier and yves saint laurent. if you turn left you get touristy shops, department stores, and the big retail like adidas and nike. go a little further and you get to the KaDeWe.
we were looking for nice gifts for our family to bring back from berlin so today we turned right. it's easy to spend 150 euros in one store if you turn right, we thought.
one stop and we changed our tune. yes, easy to spend 150 euros, not so easy to spend only 150 euros. the women working the hermes scarf counter laughed at us as we hightailed it over to the other side of the ku'damm.
four hours and many stores later we had enough for everyone - and no money. luckily, the tax-free shopping receipts will remedy that situation! gotta love free money, or the illusion thereof.
