sehr schön! we hate to leave such a beautiful place.day 3: let's hike up there! (10 mins later) ...okay, this is far enough.
our final day in switzerland started out just like the day before: an absurdly early wake-up call followed by another unannounced visitor a half hour later. but on this day we had the added bonus of yet another key in our door 10 minutes after the first. i have never been so afraid to change clothes in the "privacy" of my own hotel room.
we thought we would spend our last day on the water, but the ships don't go out until the afternoon. instead we decided to take advantage of the mountains and go up to the schlossy looking hotel high above the town, the hotel gutsch. it is an old castle that offers ghost tours. we didn't go for the tour but instead for the view. the above photo was taken on the footpath up to the hotel. (we didn't make it to the top - we're lazy.)
interesting fact: switzerland is a very superstitious place. the foothills are supposedly full of little creatures that scare you at night by sitting on your chest. farmers and shepherds still carry charms to ward off witches. the main mountain near town is called pilatus because the ghost of pontius pilate is seen rising out of the lake on good friday to wash the blood from his hands. unless he wears a name tag i don't know how anyone knows it is pontius pilate. but i digress... .
we climbed down from our lovely overlook and wandered back to the train station. we marveled once again at how nice the station is and then we boarded the train to zürich. we had about a 30 second connection in the zürich bahnhof to catch the airport train and we were back at the airport in no time. we hit the duty-free shop hard and then waved goodbye to switzerland. we plan to go back someday - when we win the lottery and buy our own chateau.
