time warp

to the 30s...

across the street from spartan stadium where san jose state's football team plays UCLA and other large schools, is san jose's municipal stadium: home of the san jose giants minor league baseball team. the name might suggest that they are the farm team for the san francisco giants major league team. this would only be slightly correct.

the san jose giants are a high-A level team. this means that there are two other teams between the san jose giants and the san francisco giants. it can take almost 12 years to make it to the majors from our little team. and these players are paid only 1,050 a month. that's a tough salary to live on in the bay area.

but baseball is always a fun outing for dan and me. it's even more fun when it's free! (tickets are normally a whopping 6 bucks.) we took our free tickets, payed our $6 parking fee and quickly dropped about $30 on dinner at turkey mike's baseball bbq and a couple of beers. so much for our night of free fun. but i didn't mind paying a few bucks to support our local team.

going to the game was like stepping back in time. the stadium is an old school park with hand painted signs for local businesses and an open air press box behind home plate complete with cheesy play-by-play announcer. there are spots for little leaguers to play catch behind the creaking wooden bleachers. only the gordon biersch beer stand and brand new jumbo-tron in the outfield remind you that we are in the 21st century bay area.

even the fans are a throwback. these days very few families of four can afford a night at the ballpark. at the giants game there were kids everywhere. large families snacked on goodies from a backpack and shared blankets. no one swore. i was shocked. the last time i saw a large family at a baseball game the father cursed out another man just before they started throwing punches. that was at an oakland a's game.

in the final innings, our team winning by 2, an old standard played over the speakers and the sun set behind the american flag. we even got to see a couple of fantastic plays. i guess it just goes to show that you still can enjoy a relatively affordable night of good, clean, fun in san jose.
