die Olympishe Spiele - the olympic games

i am an olympics junkie. i love it even more than the superbowl - except if the broncos are playing. so when i learned that i would be jobless during the olympics, and in the same time zone, i was elated. i thought: i can watch all the coverage of all the sports and i won't have to just watch highlights! and right now the US is in that sports wasteland that is basketball and hockey season so i'll get to see interesting new sports! that was before i got here.

shortly after arriving in germany dan and i discovered that the germans like very different sports than the americans. i was assuming there would be more coverage of soccer and maybe even skiing events, but when eurosport (our ESPN) showed a low level competition of the biathalon - you know, cross country skiing and then shooting a rifle - i started to worry. biathalon is cool once. would i burn out by the olympics?

well the olympics have started and yes! is the answer. there are few things more boring than watching someone else cross country ski. but do i change the channel? of course not. it's the olympics! presumably many of these events are happening at the same time right now so for all i know they could break into figure skating (pause for an all-male groan) at any minute!

i'm not sure what the coverage is like in the states this year, but i am guessing that you all didn't have roughly 7 hours of ski jumping. during these 7 hours i noticed a tiny box in the corner showing the american speed skater breaking the olympic (or world?) record. personally, i think any nation breaking any record in any sport is more exciting and worthy of coverage than the 3rd qualifying jump of the german guy currently in 31st place.

the highlight show here is short and in german so i am glad i have coverage all day. but next time (if i am in an english speaking country) i will change my viewing habits because what i have learned is this: highlights might not be so bad. and i'll take college basketball over biathalon any day!
