kleckermäulchen - drool

sara arrived early this morning and in an effort to help her stay awake we have been walking the neighborhood checking out the sites in this blog. we went past the fruit stand, we saw the bombed out church, and, of course, we went to the KaDeWe. this time we ate at the potato counter as sara is vegetarian and germany is, well, not.
then we went to baby-walz (baby world). many, many, many friends and family are having children at the moment and we were shopping for gifts. we found cozy cotton blankets and cute little teddy bears. all kinds of baby items abound at baby walz, as you might guess, and much of it is printed with little sayings - in english. i don't want to send my english speaking friends some random little hat that says "african friends" just for the sake of having english under the giraffe and monkey pictures. i wanted something german.
we found it. near the checkout counter stands a rack of bibs. like in the US there are little sayings on the bibs, but unlike in the states the writing is in german. perfect! one problem. i have no idea what they say and i would hate to buy a bib for a little half-jewish brown-eyed child that reads "daddy gave me my pretty aryan eyes."
so we take a selection of colors and sayings up to the counter and ask the check-out girl if she can translate the words for us. she is hesitant and her translation is choppy at best. we are about to give up on the whole idea when another customer comes up and begins to translate for her. much to my dismay, the sayings are typical baby fare - "spoiled but sweet," "grandpa's sunshine" and the like. then we happen upon a bib the fellow customer has trouble translating. the bib reads "kleckermäulchen!" our helper motions to her mouth, and her friend follows suit. soon the two clerks are pointing to their mouths and making a lot of noise with their saliva. they all make motions like something is flowing down their shirts. "drool!" sara and i say in unison.
literally translated "kleckermäulchen!" means: to spill from little mouth!
if you are a friend or family member with children of bib wearing age you can expect your very own "kleckermäulchen!" bib. just let me know what color.
